Saving the Ocean One Reusable Period Pad at a Time

Our reusable period pads have a story

For every 2 organic cotton period pants, we have enough offcuts to create 1 reusable period pad for planet-friendly periods, including the ocean.

What is World Ocean Day?

Did you know that 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans every year? And, of that, approximately 190,000 plastic-ridden panty liners, pads and tampons are flushed down the toilet every hour in the UK.

World Ocean Day was first proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 to celebrate our ocean and recognise our individual impact on the sea – to develop a global movement of people for the ocean. It has been celebrated on 8th June every year ever since, and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008.

Collective action for the ocean

World Ocean Day is an opportunity to understand the essential role the ocean plays in our lives and how we can take action to protect it. The fact of the matter is, the ocean is a life support for all of our planet’s inhabitants, including us, and plays a crucial role in the sustainability of our future.

The 2022 theme for the World Ocean Day is ‘Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean’. So, let’s explore how our individual periods can collectively help safeguard the ocean.

No more throwing away plastic period products

There are always things we can do for the ocean, including going plastic-free with our period products.

Founded in 2017, WUKA has created the first reusable and leak-proof period pants in the UK, plastic-free and sustainable from its packaging down to the product. It is WUKA’s mission to ensure that sustainable period products can be accessible to all, from period pants in various styles and sizes and now the WUKA Reusable Period Pad.

Always on the lookout for sustainable innovation, creating WUKA Reusable Period Pads from offcuts of our organic cotton period pants just made sense. It means less waste, less chance of disposable sanitary products being flushed down the toilet and eventually ending up in the sea and less money being spent on disposables.

How do WUKA Reusable Period Pads work?

Our organic cotton reusable pads are made from offcut fabric from our award-winning period underwear. Lined with COOLMAX® technology, this keeps your pads cool and ultra-absorbent - and leak-proof. Super soft on skin, these medium length pads are perfect for absorbing medium flows and come with wings with poppers to secure in any underwear.

  1. Before use, we recommend washing the reusable pad first to unlock its ultra-absorbency
  2. To wear, simply place it in your underwear with the gusset facing up, wrap the wings around and secure it in place with the poppers
  3. After use, give them a quick rinse and pop them in your everyday wash on 40 degrees (use our mesh laundry bag for extra protection)
  4. After washing, leave the pad to air dry (they’re quick drying!) and reuse

Easy to wash, dry and reuse

Easy to use and easy to wash, WUKA Reusable Period Pads are great eco-alternatives for reducing costs and the amount of disposable pads being left in landfills and oceans.

You will be pleased to hear that we don’t use PUL for our waterproof fabric; we use TPU, which is biodegradable in 3-5 years and without nasty chemicals. We’ve opted for COOLMAX® moisture-wicking technology in our reusable period pads as it’s soft, flexible, breathable and 5 times quicker to absorb than organic cotton. What’s more, it’s 200 times quicker to dry and it is recyclable. The poppers are made from recyclable plastic, lasting longer than metal poppers which are often treated with a plastic coat for rust protection.

Choose to reuse

Ruby Raut, CEO and co-founder of WUKA, comments:

‘Made with organic cotton, absorbent COOLMAX® and secure poppers, WUKA Reusable Period Pads mean no slippage, no chafing, no plastic in the ocean and no more plastic sticking to your pubes. Let’s develop a global movement of people with periods for the ocean this World Ocean Day. Let's choose to reuse.’
